Precept Bible Study Review: Cookies on the Lower Shelf

This giveaway is now closed….

Are you tired of trying to read the Bible in a year, 6 months or ___days walking away feeling like a complete failure? Perhaps you have tried reading the Bible as a speed reader and found in the end that you wanted to go more in-depth. Have you felt that a broad overview of scripture has helped you to understand God, but most plans move too fast? Does your scripture reading leave you feeling more like a spiritual glutton or is it a shallow “point your finger and this is God’s Word for me today?” Do you want to read the entire Bible in-depth without guilt?

I have a study you might want to consider. Broken up into three books, Cookies on the Lower Shelf is a new study authored by Pam Gillaspie and published by Precept Ministries International.

Each book is a 10 week study through scripture from Genesis to Revelation – which is 30 weeks total of in-depth Bible study. Follow this link for Cookies Part One – Genesis to Ruth to take a look inside this study.

Here is what I love about Cookies on the Lower Shelf:

1. Go at your own pace – It is flexible. It breathes with you so that if a week is overwhelming you can choose how much extra you are able to do. You can read just the minimum each week which is the Main Reading. If you find a passage is pushing you you can go deeper with “More Reading” or “Even More Reading.” These extra scripture readings include: related themes, history and stories which will have you reading the entire Bible in 30 weeks. When you do what you are able instead of rushing to keep up with an impossibly frustrating schedule you will find no guilt. So many plans offer an inflexible reading that does not budge when your life gets to be real so you rush to keep up instead of breathing right where you are. This study gives your life room to be real.

2. Space to write means room to breath – the actual book is spiral bound with wide pages offering the reader a lot of room for extra notes, to answer questions and more. The book literally bends with you instead of fighting you at every turn of the page. It might not seem like a big deal, but when you are trying to juggle four kids, a thick Bible and 12 different colored pens – you’ll be glad you bought a study that lies flat and offers room to write.

3. Meets you where you are – Perhaps these bigger Bible studies intimidate you? Maybe you haven’t ever read through the Bible and the idea of doing an in-depth study of God’s Word makes you want to run? Maybe you are a more experienced reader and you are tired of feeling bored because studies do not offer much of a “challenge?” Consider this: a less experienced Bible reader will find the pace, questions and notes of Cookies- helpful NOT intimidating. This study is not overwhelming or underwhelming it is what you put into it. So if you consider yourself a more experienced reader Cookies will not hold you back. It will challenge you when you need to be challenged and flex with your life when you need to lay low.

You might wonder is this study just for women? Although there are some references in the beginning to finding the right pair of jeans that might lead you to think “girls only” I think this study would be beneficial to guys too. Once you get into the meat of the study and how it flows with a busy schedule you will find it fits right into an active man’s life- but first you have to pick it up off the shelf. Cookies on the shelf isn’t just for women. The questions and content are not gender specific. This is not a touchy-feely Bible study. This study is not about how the Bible makes you feel. This is who, what, where, when, why and how of scripture. It will make you think. Guys should not be afraid to check it out. Who doesn’t like a cookie?

Starting September 6 the author of Cookies on the Lower Shelf, Pam Gillaspie will be leading a free online study through part one (Genesis to Ruth) of this series. What an exciting opportunity to start the school year in God’s Word – in depth and with the author.

  1. Yes, my close friends are leaders for our local Pre-cept group. I have done a few of their studies over the years. Love using my colored pens to mark-up scripture.

  2. I’ve never used this study! I have done the Bible in 90 Days twice, but always feel so rushed. This looks like a nice alternative!!

  3. I have never done a Precept Ministry study, but would love to do this one! I’ve done Bible in 90 Days, but wanted more from it. I’ve been looking for my next Bible study, this would be awesome!

  4. Sounds fun, I like the idea of taking the pressure off and soaking it in and still accomplishing a goal!
